You can now find our decals at Stardust, Fahrenheit, Kuala Lumpur! It's a really neat store with two shoplots worth of giftwares and original handmade items. Before i visited Fahrenheit, i had the misconception that it would be a high end shopping mall like Pavilion but the stuff like clothes there are surprisingly affordable! I didn't quite have the opportunity to do any real shopping while i was there but am definitely making it a point to go again:)

Had a lovely day at Crafty last weekend...i mingled, i sold, i bought....:) The part i enjoyed the most though, was talking to the customers. I realised i still had a long way to go to making our presence in the market felt...there were so many things i could have done to make our stall more interesting. Guess there's homework for now and testing out improvements in the next market we venture into:)

We're so excited to be participating as vendors this time around, because everything in this market is lovingly handmade by their creators...such a breath of fresh air from the usual markets we have that house "vintage" or "second-hand" stuff. We'll be bringing along all our MiniPack decal designs so do drop by to have a look and feel.

I hope i get a chance to shop too, especially since there'll be no shipping charges involved when i buy, buy, buy:) But before that, I better get back to preparing for the event which is only 2 weeks away...yikes! Hope to see you there!

It's been a loooong while since i've posted something on this blog but hopefully, this is a start to getting the marketing side of this business back on track. These few months have been busy busy busy, with trying to get our workshop up and running, fulfilling normal and wholesale orders and with a baby on the way..woohoo!!! It's at times like these, i really appreciate my family helping me keep things together when i go a bit berserk:)

So, a little update...our workshop renovations are complete and the next step would be to move all our stuff there. We've managed to join the Etsy Malaysia Team and want to get more involved with everyone. Am really looking forward to taking part in some art/craft bazaars as this is something i have never done before...awesomeness! All in all, a really exciting time for us!

My fingers are itchy to get some new designs out as well...hopefully, once we've settled down, they can go back to work too:)

Artist Biography:

Karen Steen, a native of Southern California, moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 2005. She completed her MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in May 2007 and has a studio at Bethlehem’s Banana Factory. Steen began her career as a commercial artist, working as an editorial illustrator for magazines such as Modern Maturity, Disney Channel, Westways, and Shape. She has bachelors degrees in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California earned in 1988 and in Business from Colorado College, in Colorado Springs, Colorado earned in 1978.

Karen’s artistic life includes her commitment to art education. She believes there is a freedom in art that doesn’t exist in other endeavors. “If children learn to use and be comfortable with that freedom, we will have a richer, more flexible and creative society. The empowerment that comes with becoming a creative problem-solver will help young people in whatever they choose to pursue in life,” she says. This belief inspired Karen to found a volunteer run art program at her childrens’ elementary school in her hometown, South Pasadena, California. She currently teaches in the B-Smart and Holy Infancy programs at the Banana Factory, and in after school workshops at Saucon Valley Elementary School, in Hellertown, PA.

Happy Chinese New Year, everyone!! I'm sure everyone's rushing around like little worker ants getting ready for the big New Year's Eve dinners and all the households are noisy with the sound of children...definitely like that in ours:)

Just a little note, we'll be going away for a 2 week break, starting today the 18th of February and will be back on the 27th of February 2010. Any orders received from today till the 27th will be processed when we get back on the 28th of February.

My all time favourite (for now, anyways...) is 'Plucked', shown above at a humongous 40.5"x29" is oil and graphite on hand/laser-cut wood with bass strings..ohhh...i need a bucket for all this drool=)

Mystic Space - NEW DESIGN

I've been on a short break from blogging and am really excited to be getting my engines started again. Here's a simple and cheerful design i finished today for the kids range. Mystic Space covers 8 feet by 4 feet when arranged as shown in the picture above and is also perfect as add-on decor to plain wardrobe doors.

Here are the measurements:
7 circle decals with diameters ranging from 2.2 inches to 12.7 inches
1 semicircle decal with diameter 12.7 inches
14 mystic decals ranging from 3.2 inches to 5.4 inches width

It can be ordered in 1 colour (just by mentioning 1 colour for all when you choose your colours) and that will bring the age limit up a bit but keep the fun intact:)

Home, Sweet Home - NEW DESIGN

I have a new design up:) "Home, Sweet Home" - measuring 11.3" high x 20" wide. It was inspired by a beautiful cat i saw at the petshop the other day. She had the most adoring, mesmerising clear blue eyes and I had to seriously fight the urge to take her home.

Our Website's Back Up and The Doofbags

One Saturday evening, i spotted some buzzing activity around the shoplots near my home. So i rounded up my clan (more like dragged my hubby and son) and decided to go check it out.

It was a charity drive with some vendors giving 100% of their sales to the charity of their choice. Some gave their proceeds to Breast Cancer Awareness, the RSPCA and a whole lot more. OK...I have to admit I'm bad with the details but one of the vendors really stuck in my head...Doof Industries.

They had huge...and i mean humongous...beanbags for sale..and in to-die-for colours! Even the labels were so BIG they stole the attention the beanbags were getting. With names like Chuck and Roxanne, who could resist not jumping and sinking into one of them:)

100% water/drool resistant (what more could mummy ask for...) with an inner lining for the beans so that you can take all the beans out at one go when you want to wash the beanbag..(well, mummy could ask for that too:)

Best part is, you can rent the bags when you are having a chilled out do and need more laurel-resting locations. Spoke to hubby about this and he's all in for a BBQ... soon:)

It's 6am and I'm awake...

Toilet training my 2 and a half year old boy has been a breeze... during the day anyways...we've successfully taken him off his diapers with very few accidents...and he prompts us when he needs to go to the loo:)

It's the night that hurts me the most...why i say hurt? Because it's the bed or my precious lounging couch that GETS IT. The bed...we're planning to change to a bigger one (once he's toilet trained nights anyways) but the couch! the couch! I chose everything from the sponge, to the covers material and as i mentioned before, it's precious...

I can wash everything...but what do i do with the sponge (or mattressy bit). Sun it on the driveway floor? Sigh...i guess this is all part of having kids...make sure you don't have perishable (and i don't mean the edible kind) or precious things lying around... else they WILL perish...haha!:)

Like I said, it's 6am (well, 7am now) and I've been working on a top secret project:) If it ever gets up to standard, I might showcase it and might even put some stuff up for sale. For now though, it's an obsession i need to get out of my system. I thank all the patient and loving husbands for letting their wives go a bit mad the obsessive way:)

An hour or so more to go...and i'll get to see the smiles on both my angel's faces.. Good Morning, World!

Call me ignorant...

but i never knew we had such beautiful stamps. I mean i knew we had lovely fruit stamps, bird stamps etc around the 30 cents and 50 cents range but since using Malaysian Registered Post and shipping overseas, I've had the lovely opportunity of seeing the more expensive and colourful RM10, RM20 and RM5 stamps..and they are BEE-U-tiful!

Unfortunately for me, i can't keep these stamps...otherwise, my shipment might as well lie in the gutter and wait for the heavy rainfall to take it to sea where it will float (or sink) to its destination.

Then came a special request from one of my customers asking me to include any used Malaysian stamps i had lying around with her order. That got me thinking... so i went-a-hunting around the house and found me...wait for it....a paltry 3 pieces of used stamps.

Fortunately, I have an awesome aunt who has been collecting every stamp she's received in the mail since the beginning of time and has graciously obliged to part with a few duplicates.

I'm making it a point now to start a little passive collection of stamps...for a few reasons:
1) Stamps are such tiny, beautiful pieces of art...i wouldn't mind a little collection..

2) The next time i have a request like this, i won't have to go digging around other people's mailboxes...hehe...it's not like i did it this time, k?

3) If I'm not filthy rich when i'm old and unable to hold a mouse any longer...i'll have the stamps to help pay for my remaining days on earth..

My Saturday morning was spent installing the Mark Twain quote earlier mentioned in the blogpost "A Custom Order In Progress". We also helped install Skyline just above our customer's bedpost while we were there. As promised, here are the end results!

Entry #1: I like the fact i helped in the arrangement of this Verdant. I like, even more, the fact that it was the customer who made this decal simply awesome. Check out the 4 colour combo....Beige Lines and a mixture of Brown and Light Yellow flowers against a vintage rose coloured wall....That, and the fact that it spans across 8 feet and merges 2 sections of the wall. The customer used 2 sets of Verdant to create this design and wanted the flowers of each set to be different colours so that he could mix them around.

Entry #2: These pictures used one set of Starry starry night in White against a blue wall. An easy installation until you see that this customer took the effort to apply the decal as close to the ceiling as he could and the result is ethereal:)

How can we already have a winner without a vote, you ask? Coz both entries were entered by Mr Howard Lai from Labuan! And he definitely deserves to win this month's voucher for all the heart he put into his home...all DIY style:)

Birds Flying By The Moon

Birds in various stages of flight...this design gave me a sense of freedom and serenity. Much like getting away for a while from the hectic hustle and bustle that is KL. Check out the close-ups, lots of detailing in the wings:)

Royal His And Hers

These are the cutest little decals at just 8.7 inches tall. I can think of so many ways to use them...as washroom signs, on cupboards, by the sinks, on the wall along the bedside tables, as wedding gifts. Ooohh...wedding gifts..I just had a lightbulb moment...a decal for the bride and groom with their names under the chess pieces! Now, i just gotta see who's getting married next:)

Grass Stalks

My family, friends and even the ants know I'm not one to go pottering about in the garden under the hot sun. My idea of the ideal garden would be grass...think golf course grass...and maybe a huge shady tree. Don't get me wrong, i love everything about flowers and plants but since my gardening skills are about as awesome as expired milk, it be safer for them to be fake. Thus, the creation of Grass Stalks. Do check out the close-ups for the design...there's a whole lot of detail going on and the main picture just doesn't do it justice.

I just love my little flower, don't I? So much so, I designed another version of it:) This one is named Bloom2 XL, a combination of overlapping positives and negatives of the original Bloom2 design. It even comes in 1 single piece for easy installation and perfect for those who don't want the bother of having to think up arrangements for their design.

Streamlined International Shipping

We started out shipping all our international orders via UPS Express Saver but it soon became apparent that we were being a tad idealistic. Fast shipping, trackability and convenience wasn't a necessity for everyone and it wasn't fair for us to blanket a shipping method across all our customers. As a customer myself, I'd like to be offered more than one shipping option, in line with my comfort level.

So, with this in mind, I set out to research other shipping methods and decided to put a little faith in our National Post Office. It is, after all, 2009 and Malaysia has been growing in leaps and bounds in terms of the efficiency of our postal services.

My criteria was simple...the shipping method had to be reliable, much more affordable and arrive within a reasonable time frame... and Registered Malaysian Post fulfilled all these.

Recently, i started subscribing to Daily Web Traffic Tips, which as the title suggests, emails me a tip a day to increase web traffic. I thought...Hey, what's there to lose? No harm in checking it out, right? And since this is probably THE one topic...on this "web-iverse" anyways, that no one could ever know too much about...i thought, Heck..why not..

So, here i am trying out tip #14...claiming my blog on Technorati, a directory of blogs and social networks, amongst other things. Blank Canvas Designs is proud to finally join the many hand-made sellers out there on the infamous Etsy.com. As of this moment, we are still learning our way around it. "We"...because I managed to convince my little sister to come on board.

I'm barely containing my excitement...For one, we get to be a part of an immensely talented and creative community. And then...I get to team up with my sister, sappy as it may sound, but it's true. All the production and shipping of the decals will be from Kuala Lumpur while Adrina runs and manages the etsy store from Melbourne.

On top of that, I now get to offer PAYPAL as an additional payment option for our decals, though only at the Etsy store. My latest custom order...this awesome quote for a living room wall. Size required W119 x H28 inches. Colour Black. Sample font was provided in the picture below.

It was a little challenging not having a type font to work with, but i have to say, i was pretty happy with the mockup. After some minor tweaking to get the layout right, it was straight to the drawing board. The finished product and installations in the coming posts. Drop in mid-June for the new designs!

Glow-in-the-dark!!

Yup, you read right...it's GLOW IN THE DARK removable vinyl. There are a few reasons to why I'm so excited about this new addition to our vinyl range. Firstly, an old friend of mine asked if i could produce glow-in-the-dark removable stickers for her 1-year old.

Secondly, i remembered standing in my nephew's room, staring at his ceiling where his mother had lovingly stuck plastic glow-in-the-dark stars and geckos with blue-tack. Some of the stars and geckos had fallen off (or were peeled off by one very curious 5 year old), leaving ugly spots where the blue-tack had taken the paint with it. I was heartbroken, to say the least..

Then, she gave me an extra pack of plastic stars and geckos for my 2 year old. The excitement in his voice when i turned off the lights was all it took for me to go hunting for glow in the dark vinyl. (Nope, I didn't stick it on the wall/ceiling...i just spread it out on the floor:) And now that i've found it, I can't wait to share it with you!

I'm working on a new range specially suited to glowing our kids to sleep, so please watch this space, k...For the moment though, this vinyl is available for all our other products. I recommend "Starry starry night", "Snowflakes" or "Emoticons". If you can't find it in the vinyl choices, just mention you want glow-in-the-dark vinyl in the "additional info" box at checkout and i'll get right to it:)

It's been really hectic at the BCD workspace, what with learning how to work the website, trying to constantly increase traffic and finishing off products...but I've finally gotten around to coming up with more new designs. Trust me, I've been feeling really bad..so "a thousand apologies" go out to all those lovely people who have been checking in on us to see what's new and what's been going on..*on hands and knees*

Also, I've been re-reading the blog...and i think it needs a more personal touch. What do you think? I'm better at just chattering away about the how/what/where (you get the drift...) of BCD anyways...and I hope it'll make for more interesting reading. Like a logbook of events in the life of BCD and me.

Supersize me!

Like the design but think it's too complicated? Supersize me! We had a customer who loved "Eden" and wanted it supersized. So we picked out bits of "Eden" and came up with some arrangements for her.

During application, she rearranged the decal to make the design truly hers. Here's the end result!

We know that with over 50 vinyl colours to choose from, making the choice can be rather overwhelming. In the words of one of our customers, "Which colour? Which shade?? Which combination??!"

Firstly, narrow down your colour choices by identifying the colour theme of your room or the colour of the feature wall you're thinking of having the wall decal applied. Decals are not new...they’ve been around for ages. The designs however…are getting more and more awesome with time…
The word ‘decal’ comes from the word ‘decalcomania’ coined in the 1800s.
Decals are designs cut from a solid piece of vinyl. It will have a backing paper on its adhesive side and a low tack application tape on its front.
Good quality decals, such as those from Blank Canvas, use very thin vinyl, with about 5-7 years durability and look like they’re hand-painted onto your surface. They can be applied to any smooth surface and removed without leaving any mark. Think walls, doors, fridges, tiles, glass, lamps, bookcases, guitars…the list is endless…leaving you with a totally individual piece.
Vinyl decals are waterproof and can be cleaned, drenched…you name it, once applied, of course.
Vinyl decals can withstand heat. It can be used to ensure it sticks to or detaches from the surface effectively without leaving a residue.
Decals are different from stickers, which are printed onto label paper using ink jet, laser or offset printing and use the peel-and-stick method. Stickers use high-adhesion solvents, which will most likely peel paint off from your surface. They are also generally much thicker than vinyl decals.

Our First Reseller!

We rushed to stock up for our first reseller, LiveItUp! at LG floor (new wing), 1 Utama Shopping Complex just before Chinese New Year. A few 4am nights but it was well worth the effort! The display decal is from our very own 'Verdant' in Black and Pastel Orange. Isn't it pretty?
